RED WINE
Merlot is perhaps the best red wine to serve if you’re
planning to satisfy most of your guests. It is a good complement
to lighter roast meats, particularly fowl such as chicken
or duck. It is also tasty with roast pork and leg of lamb.
Pinot Noir is the great grape of Burgundy with scent, flavour
and texture unmatched anywhere. New world versions are lighter
with lovely strawberry aromas and some spice and chocolate
if oaked. A lovely wine to accompany duck, pork, chicken
and even fish. It also goes well with creamy sauces or dishes
featuring cheese.
Cabernet Sauvignon is a grape of great character: spicy,
herby and tannic, with characteristic “blackcurrant”
aroma. A bold, rich red wine that goes best with heartier
dishes such as prime rib, rack of lamb and any game meats.
Syrah, alias Shiraz gives a spicy, peppery full-bodied wine
that makes an excellent choice if you plan to serve spicy
food, roast lamb, aubergine dishes or barbecued meats.
